GLOBAL CONCERNS
Problems in Brief:
The present world faces many problems as never before. The most prominent amongst them include global warming, nuclear war threat and terrorism. Global warming is the topmost concern for over half a century. Post 9/11 and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the danger of terrorist threats in the form of counter strikes are increasing by the day. In addition to it, the deaths due to suicide bombers, rocket attacks and gun firing by militants have increased. Not to forget the growing poverty, scarcity of pure drinking water and growing unemployment. Although, many social organizations and peace organizations are set up to combat and regulate these growing concerns, it would take extreme efforts for these organizations to make even an iota of difference.
Global Warming:
Of all the concerns, global warming has hogged a lot of limelight. It is the most widely studied topic in the world. Many government and non-government organizations throughout the world have deputed scientists to find the actual cause of global warming. The effects of global warming can be seen everywhere, from the arctic regions of the north to the Antarctic regions of the south. Human activities can be considered to be one of the leading reasons for the rise in the global temperature. Even though, human beings consider themselves to be the most intelligent living beings on the earth, yet they are directly or indirectly destroying their own living habitat. It is due to the incessant activities of mankind that the greenhouse gases such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide are let into the atmosphere which hampers the sun’s reflection, thereby contributing to the increase in the worldwide temperatures. Deforestation is considered to be the second most prominent cause for global warming. Large covers of forest are cut down for agricultural and for constructional purposes. Unless steps are taken by human beings to prevent the cutting of trees, global warming could not be prevented.
Terrorism:
Since the attacks on the World Trade Centre in September 2001, terrorism is in the forefront of the concerns surrounding the globe. Terrorism was the main reason behind the wars in Afghanistan. It is hoped that in the near future, human beings can contain terrorism to a large extent and help in the facilitation of world peace. |
