UNITED NATIONS PEACE KEEPING PROCESS

UN Peace Keeping:

United Nations Peacekeeping forces are in the forefront of spreading the message of peace amongst the nations of the world. These forces are located in various unstable and warring regions like Kosovo and Liberia. Most of the peacekeeping forces come from member states. The United Nations by itself does not entertain its autonomous military. This helps the United Nations to implement peace agreements and admonish the fighters from taking up aggressions. UN peace keepers were stationed in East Timor to assess the volatile situation and stayed there till the country gained independence in the year 2001. There is no hard and fast rule for the members’ nations to dispatch their soldiers in a volatile region or nation. Only two nations, namely Portugal and Canada have participated in all the UN Peace Keeping functionings. Most of the peacekeeping functionings need to have the approval of the Security Council.

Miscellaneous:

It was hoped by the UN founders that the United Nations would help in the prevention of wars amongst countries and help in the reduction of any possibility of future battles. However, it is observed that such hopes have not got completely accomplished. It was extremely difficult in the Cold War period. After the end of the cold war, fresh calls were made by the United Nations to come in the forefront with regards to the world peace, owing to numerous military wars around the world. Thanks to the Soviet breakup, the United States came in the forefront of world dominance.

An Organization for Peace:

In 1988, the United Nations Peace Keeping force received the Nobel prize for peace. This was followed by a peace price bestowed upon the Secreatry General Kofi Annan. Apart from this, the United Nations conserves a series of medals known as the United Nations Service Medal. These are mainly bestowed to the military forces, who implement UN agreements. The first medal to be supplied was the United Nations Service Medal, which was bestowed on the forces of United Nations who took part in war in the Korean Peninsula. It is hoped that the United Nations would continue in its endeavour to maintain world peace for years to come.
