UNITED NATIONS
Introduction:
The United Nations came to supercede the League of Nations. It was mainly hoped that the UN would step in between warring nations for the purpose of avoiding war. Initially, the United Nations comprised of fifty countries that put their signature in the United Nations Charter. The United Nations comprises of five permanent members, namely the People’s Republic of China, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Russian Federation, the United States of America and the French Republic. These five victorious World War II nations have the right to exercise their veto power over any resolution that comes for discussion in the United Nations. The main aim of the United Nations is to alleviate co-operation in economic development, international security, international law, human rights and in progress of the society.
UN Countries:
Till date, as much as 192 countries have become members of the United Nations covering all the independent nations. The headquarters of the UN are located in New York City from where administrational and substantial meetings are held on an annual basis. There are many administrative divisions of the United Nations Organization comprising of the Secretariat, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the General Assembly. Apart from these, there are other extra bodies which deal with the administration of other agencies of the UN system including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
UN Headquarters:
The Headquarters of the United Nations was constructed on an 18 acre plot in the city of New York. It was bought owing to the contribution of John D Rockefeller in the year 1946. Although, the land in which the United Nations was built is situated in US, it is considered to be an international dominion. Before 1949, the United Nations had to use different venues located in New York State and London. Apart from the headquarters, major UN agencies are situated in The Hague, Montreal, Bonn, Copenhagen, Geneva, and Vienna and also in other cities. Currently, the United Nations is planning to expand their building owing to the ageing of the current structure. |
