THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
About the WHO:
The World Health Organization is one amongst the many particularized bureau of United Nations. It acts as an aligning authority on the external health of the public. The World Health Organization was constituted on the 7th of April, 1948. The headquarters of the World Health Organization are in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization took over the job of its precursor, the Health organization which was a delegacy of the League of Nations.
Activities of WHO:
The World Health Organization takes efforts to check the eruptions of diseases, which are infectious in nature. Apart from this, the World Health Organization also helps in the prevention and treatment of diseases such as AIDS, Malaria, and SARS. In addition, the World Health Organization also helps support the distribution and growth of drugs and vaccines. The first major success experienced by WHO was against smallpox in the year 1979, it declared the world to be free from the disease. It was the first such case when the disease was eliminated through proper human planning. WHO is also gaining success in developing vaccines for schistosomiasis and malaria. In addition, WHO also aims to eliminate polio in the upcoming years. More than this, the World Health Organization also helps in the encouraging the intake of vegetables and fruits and also, discourages the excess use of tobacco. Discussions are also going on with regards to the development of the influenza vaccine.
The Structure of WHO:
The delegations of the World Health Assembly are appointed by the member states of the world health organization. Almost all the member states of the United Nations are taken to be eligible for the membership of the World Health Organization. With the help of a simple majority, any country can gain membership of the WHO. At present, the WHO comprises of 193 member states. One of the prominent members of the WHO was Taiwan. After the membership of the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan was forced to leave WHO. Due to pressure from China, Taiwan is denied membership each year. The real fact is otherwise. Taiwan journalists and doctors are denied access to any information related to the World Health Organization. |
